Midland League

After the original meeting to form a league was held at the Station Hotel in Larbert on 9 April 1891, the Midland League was officially constituted on 18 April 1891. A further meeting on 16 May 1891 as held by eight clubs at the Crown Hotel in Alloa, which was to be the league’s headquarters. Representatives of Camelon, Dunblane, Alva, Alloa Athletic, Grangemouth and Dunfermline Athletic were all in attendance. Mr Murphy of Camelon FC was asked to communicate with Bridge of Allan, Clackmannan, Cowdenbeath and Raith Rovers to be asked to also join.

The elected representatives of the league were as follows

President – John Duff (Alloa Athletic)

Vice president – James Brown (Dunfermline Athletic)

Secretary – Mr Murphy (Camelon)

Treasurer – Mr Minto (Alva)

After Raith Rovers had won the first championship, the league was officially dissolved, and reconstituted as a new league, but without the champions. Clackmannan also left but King’s Park, formerly of the Scottish Alliance, joined, and promptly won the eight team league. The collapse of the Scottish Federation in 1893 saw East Stirlingshire and Falkirk enter and both were to win the title in the following two seasons. They, and Stenhousemuir who won the league in 1896, then moved on to help form the stronger Scottish Combination. The Midland League lasted for six seasons in total, but was superseded by the creation of the Central Combination which included four of the Midland League clubs.

On 25 June 1897 a new competition, The Central Combination, was formed to replace the Midland League.

An attempt at reforming the Midland League came in 1903 when ten clubs met in Glasgow. This version lasted just one season before six of the eastern based clubs left to reform the Eastern League.

The last time the Midland League was played was between 1908 and 1910 when Bo'ness, Broxburn Athletic, Clackmannan, Dunblane, Falkirk 'A', Stenhousemuir and West Lothian Albion banded together. Bo’ness, Broxburn Athletic and Stenhousemuir went on to help form the Central League in 1909, while champions Falkirk ‘A’ were one of the founder members of the Scottish Reserve League. Broxburn Shamrock joined but the competition fizzled out and was unfinished by the end of the season. Although some games under the auspices of the Midland League were played in 1910-11, these were few and it’s likely the league disbanded during the season.
