Glasgow and District Junior League

The Glasgow and District Junior League (GDJL) has had several incarnations, many of which were decimated by the Glasgow Junior League’s (GJL) disputes with the Scottish Junior FA.

The first league to use the name of Glasgow and District Junior League was formed in July 1899. It had been speculated that the GJL was going to reduce its membership to eight clubs and form a Second Division. Instead the unsuccessful clubs formed an eight club Glasgow District Junior League. In August 1900 the league was renamed the Scottish Junior League (SJL), which continued until 1904 when it disbanded.

Meanwhile the GDJL name had been resurrected in July 1901 by eight clubs. In July 1904 it lost all of its members except Barrhead Ferenenze to the GJL when it formed a Second Division. The GDJL decided to continue without the city clubs despite the misleading title. After the disbanding of the GJL Division 2 in 1905, the expelled clubs continued as the Glasgow District League with the exception of Parkhead Athetic, but added Barrhead Ferenenze, Dumbarton Harp and Linthouse. In 1906 the league expanded to 12 clubs.

In 1907 the league was once again decimated by the GJL’s decision to reform the Second Division, however it soldiered on by including clubs from Dunbartonshire, Renfrewshire, Lanarkshire and Stirlingshire. The clubs that joined the GJL Div 2 were Dumbarton Corinthians, Dumbarton Harp, Levern Victoria, St Anthony’s and Yoker Athletic. By 1910 the GDJL was reduced to amateur and non-gate taking clubs whilst retaining their SJFA membership.

The last mention of the GDJL was in 1924 when the Second GJL changed its name. The league lasted only about another season before disbanding.
